I think the Next Generation is my favorite version of Star Trek, because they were able to develop the characters more. Of course, being on for 8 seasons (as opposed to just 3 for the original) helps.
As for Q, he had some good moments, and some bad moments.

Do you think Q had problems learning how to spell his name???

Probably. Remember the episode "Q who?", where we briefly met TWO Qs, and they were both named Q. This tells me they come from a completely different reality than ours, so they probably did have trouble understanding how we name things or people.

The continuum was an interesting concept.

May be a repeat, but when TNG first came on, there could be no talking in the house. If you messed up my mom's night to see Picard. Well there was hell to pay. I watched it with her, but there had to be no intereuptions. Anyhow...

My Dad and I always watched Star Trek together and shared popcorn - he wasn't as strict about the no interuptions LOL ^..^
Oh, and my 6th grade teacher had the Time cover with Picard on the front tacked up behind her desk - she had a crush on him LOL ^..^

Cool. My Civics teacher in 9th grade was a big Kirk fan.

Next Gen was great, and Patrick Stewart is one of the best actors on the planet. Plus he's practically the only British-accented Star Trek character that doesn't make me cringe...Lt. Reed was pretty obviously the token Englishman for everyone to laugh at, but Picard has command written all over him.

I don't know, I think Reed is my favorite character on "Enterprise" -- after Jonathan Archer.

I liked him, certainly, but I got the feeling that he was too much there to laugh at.

I'll give you that one. At least at first, he was the butt of a lot of jokes. Like when he and Trip went on shore leave and got robbed, and when they were stranded in the shuttlepod and he had that fantasy about T'pol. But once things settled down a bit, he was the unflappable, stiff-upper-lip Officer. And he got to deliver one of my favorite lines of the entire series. In "Terra Prime", when they had to dodge that comet coming into land on Mars and nearly got splattered all over the landscape in the process, he said, "That was fun. Can we do it again?"

That's for sure - Reed was a pretty funny guy. If they'd given the character the depth of T'Pol or Trip then that would've been even cooler... ...but I suppose even Star Trek is governed by the bizarre laws of television production, so the fact that Connor Trinneer is way more attractive than Dominic Keating means that Connor Trinneer's character is way more three-dimensional than Dominic Keating's. Not that Trip was a bad thing
