On another topic, we got talking about Data (specifically, his relationship with Spot). It caused me to ponder why an android would have a pet cat in the first place, since he is incapable of any real affection. I think it's the same reason he plays music and paints. He doesn't really enjoy these things, but he does them because they are things that people do. He thinks that the best way to become a person is by acting as much like one as possible. This is one of the things that makes Data fascinating to me.
Of course, feel free to jump in with any thoughts you have about Data.

I don't think this is very amusing, Dean. You copied this verbatim from another forum and simply pasted it here. I happen to know this because I am the same Atoz who posted it on the other forum. What's the matter? Can't you think of topics on your own?

Anyway, Data is an outsider. A lot of us feel as if we're struggling to fit in, and Data is someone we can identify with for that reason. He is also in a position to notice things about human culture than we take for granted. I think that's why he is so popular.

He's rather like Spock in the original series. He can get away with criticizing human behavior because he is essentially not human.

Although this is a copied topic which I disprove of, I will reply anyway. At first I found it hard to believe that he could not feel anything..... being a human and previously un aware of anything like this it took time for me to understand. So yes, I think he does this so he seems more natural. I agree MrAtoz

I know! It takes a really good actor to make you forget that he's a human being and imagine that he's made up of circuits! Brent Spiner pulled this off wonderfully!

Oh don't get me started! The first time I saw it I was completely unprepared for that! I was crying like a baby! But it's still one of my favorites among the movies.

Remember the other time they thought he was dead? In "The Most Toys"? What was that Riker said, For a man without any emotions, he sure inspires them in other people!

That depends on how you define "soul" doesn't it? I'm an agnostic myself, so I think "soul" means the collective part of each of us that makes us a unique individual. By that definition, Data definitely has one.

I tend to agree with that, too. To me, "soul" is a word we use to describe the essence of a person, and Data surely has such an essence.
But speaking of "The Most Toys", here's a chance for some creative thinking. Can you think of any way Data could have escaped from Kivas Fajo? The obvious thing that occurs to me is he could have started breaking his collection. But naturally Data would never even think of deliberately damaging someone else's property.

That's true. It wouldn't occur to Data at all. And anyway it would only make Fajo take stronger steps to restrain him, maybe a stasis field or something. I was thinking he could use the replicator in some way. Surely Data could think of any number of common items (*cough* MacGyver) he could use to batter down the door with.
