Has anyone been watching Dr. Who lately? The new series, with new Doctor Matt Smith, is now airing Saturday and Tuesday nights on the BBC America channel.

I have watched one, it was ok. Is it worth a second look?

I've only seen the first two, and personally I think it's going downhill. It may simply be that the formula is starting to wear thin.
In the pilot episode, for example, didn't the Atraxi strike you as stupid? I mean, here they are, frantically searching the Earth for "Prisoner Zero", which can shapechange at will, and the first thing they do is broadcast their intentions over every radio on the planet, to make sure the thing knows they're looking for it! And what was the point of all the comatose patiensts suddenly saying, "Doctor." Yeah, granted it was spooky, but in the end it doesn't make sense.

I used to be a big Dr. Who fan, but I have to say the new doctor does not do it for me. The Doctor is supposed to be eccentric surely, but acts positively "flaky"!

Yes, it almost looks like he goes out of his way sometimes to be that way. And half the time he acts as if he hasn't a clue what's going on. Of course that may be the writers' fault. At the same time the new Doctor came in, the old head writer left the show. They have all new writers now, you notice.

The adverts seem to be making a big deal out of the idea that in the new season starting this spring, the Doctor will be visiting America. So what?

I've only seen one or two of the new season, and I have to say it's as bad as I thought or worse. The first one was about some new aliens ("The Silence" is all they are called) who can't be remembered! That is to say, you see one, he automatically plants a post-hypnotic suggestion in your brain to erase your memory of him! The Doctor encounters these things in 1969, and supposedly they've been on Earth all along, quietly ruling the planet without anyone knowing it. And the Doctor's solution just made no sense whatsoever!

I'm afraid I haven't been keeping up with it. Er... can you tell us the solution, or would that be cheating?

I think they did. But then, they've gotten rid of them before and they keep coming back. For some reason, the fans love the things. Me, I got tired of them a long time ago.

I'm afraid I haven't been keeping up with it. Er... can you tell us the solution, or would that be cheating? I can't believe I forgot you asked this. I was sort of hoping the conversation would turn to this, but it didn't. What he did was plant his own post-hypnotic suggestion in the footage of the Apollo Moon Landing, to the effect that you were supposed to kill these aliens everytime you see one! The idea was that people would kill them before they had time to erase their memories. This is so utterly unlike the Doctor's personality, I just don't know where to begin. My nephew came for a visit a few weeks back and he loves the new Doctor. He was a bit disappointed that I wasn't watching it any more.

I just watched one of the new episodes called "The Rings of Akhaton" last night and BOY they aren't even PRETENDING to be doing science fiction anymore are they? This was pure fantasy! People flying around in space withouth spacesuits, giant red stars with ring systems, ridiculous looking aliens, badguys firing magical force beams. I could probably stomach all this except that the story itself didn't make any sense. Ah well.

I haven't watched in a LONG time. But I was browsing another forum the other day where they were just gushing about how "great" the writing was! Of course they all agreed that Amy Pond was the best companion in the entire history of the show, so I guess there's no accounting for taste .
