I see where you're coming from, although it certainly added a new dimension to Star Trek, one which is present in real life but until then was sorely unrepresented. If would have been interesting to explore various ideas associated with religious belief, yes. The problem is that most religious people have to believe in a God who didn't leave that much physical evidence (unless you count the universe itself). The Prophets exist in the wormhole, they are physically detectable to sensors -- scientifically, there is no doubt that they actually do exist. This makes the Bajoran religion probably unique.
