I initially thought the holographic doctor was a good idea, but then he just suddenly became a sentient being in his own right, with no real explanation (that I ever saw) for how that happened. I could understand if he was just a bundle of algorithms just like any other holodeck character, but how did he become self-aware? It just doesn't make any sense. If all ship's computers could create self-aware individuals, they computers themselves would have to be considered sentient!

I will have to say good point on that although it has been years since I have seen the show. I hate watching reruns so I rarely watch anything twice. Like Titantic. I knew the ship was going to sink. So why watch it again?? I hope they are not going to make a sequel!!

I'm glad we see eye to eye on something. There were so many good stories on TNG about how Data's algorithms made him not quite human, and showing how he worked at it. If they had done the same thing with the doctor, showing how different he was from a real, sentient individual, that would have been absolutely fascinating. But it's like the writers were to lazy to bother thinking about that -- they just made him another character, like everybody else....

actually, on DS9 they have the Doctor's creator come and interview Dr. Bashir and you get a pretty interesting explination of how the doctor was programed to learn and develop and expand his program......

That shouldn't matter. Data was sentient because of his revolutionary positronic brain, which no one has been able to duplicate (not even Data himself when he created his daughter, Lal). The doctor doesn't have that. He's just an ordinary multi-tronic computer (Voyager's computer, in fact). If he can be self-aware, then all ship's computers should be self-aware.

I have to agree with Capt. Kat; the Doctor is undoubtedly the most overall appealing character in the show.
And I can't believe you guys just filled two pages with discussion about Jeri Ryan's bust.

I can see it now: "Star Trek: Voyager - Seven of Nine Technical Guide"
And the sad thing is, I can see it selling.

Liked the show or at least Season 1, 2, 3 and part of 4 and then with the Blonde Borg Bimbo the show went down hill.

I dunno, she wasn't that terrible a character. I mean, even Neelix has his redeeming qualities...somewhere.
