I'm a little confused. Everybody seems to be talking about replicating people! Are we talking about the Star Trek technology, or the creatures on Stargate who replicated human forms?
The technology would be great. Although it would wreak havoc with our capitalistic manufacturing system, I'm sure we would adapt. You have to remember that it wouldn't create something from nothing -- the raw materials still have to be found and processed. I imagine it would work hand in hand with transporter technology. Imagine being able to fire a xporter beam at a truck full of trash, reducing that waste matter to its basic components, and reassembling it all as raw material. That would be wonderful!

I thought so.
Replicators would probably put so many people out of work, we'd pretty much have to go to some kind of socialistic system. People would still be needed to run things, but so few that they would be able to only work at jobs they really enjoyed doing (like designing and manning starships, for example). The real question is what would happen to the rest if left to their own devices? Unfortunately, here in the 21st century, most people would probably lock themselves in a room with Grand Theft Auto or whatever their video game of preference was. But Star Trek is so great because if gives us a positive answer to that question -- people would work to improve themselves, they would study, they would learn, they would create. The potential is there for us to be so much better!

Humanity has MASSIVE potential. It is never really realized due to polarization of the population! Or great divides so to speak.

I believe William Shatner talks about a real-life "replicator" based on nanotechnology that's being theorised and might be developed in a few years; it's in his book I'm Working On That (ISBN 0-671-04737-X).
Replicator technology would be great, and would not only eliminate poverty and hunger, but also pave the way to a money-less economy.
