Something to do with the collapse of civialization as we know it. I can't get into details but trust me it would be bad.

I don't see anything wrong with "Trekkie". In my experience, people who insist on "Trekker" tend to take themselves way too seriously (although I may have to reassess that conclusion, in light of some of the people on this forum.)

Of course, there is taking yourself too seriously, and then again there is not taking yourself seriously enough. Star Trek is not just a TV show about shooting at aliens. It raises many issues about society and about people in general that I feel we should take seriously because they are serious things.

Kind of like the theme of South Park! They have a message often in thier story line that shows you how really silly society as a whole is. Just one mans opinion.

Okay, let me explain what I meant by that. A number of years ago, I picked up a rumor that there was a Star Trek fan club in a nearby city. After a great deal of effort and sheer dumb luck (because the group apparently made no attempt to advertise itself), I finally discovered that they held a business meeting at a certain branch library on the second Saturday of every month. When I finally found them, one of the first things they said to me was, "We are NOT trekkies; we are Trekkers."
I attended several of these business meetings, asking them if they did anything other than talk about the state of the group's checking account or how many club T-shirts they needed to order. And they would babble enthusiastically about their fund-raisers for the Diabetes Foundation, or their summer reading program, or the conventions they used to go to, or how they would sometimes play paint-ball. But strangely enough, they never got around to telling me when these other events were, or when the regular club meetings were! I finally gave up on them. That's why I have a bad opinion of "Trekkers".

I don't consider myself either one of these though I am a fan of Star Trek and other Sci-fi shows. I don't think it really matters as long as being uptight about the label/name of fans doesn't take away from the positives!!
I'm a fan of a lot of different things! Some things I despise, and other things I don't feel one way or another!!

I never knew there were two different names. My parents always thought of themselves as Trekkies.
