I voted already, just want to point out that I like the Enteprise that Kirk had as well. To me that one is the best. Though I agree Picard's was very versatile and had the saucer seperation thing going on.

Kirk's Enterprise (both the Constitution and the Constitution Refit) had the ability to separate the saucer as well. But it was a one time event, for emergency use only since a row of explosive bolts separated the primary and secondary hulls.

I did not think that Kirk had that in a ship?

Whenever I think of the enterprise, the first image I see is the ship crashing into earth and Data saying "oh sh*t!" (BTW that would be the NCC-1701D Galaxy Class enterprise) ^..^

I do remember reading somewhere that Roddenberry had that saucer separation in mind from the beginning, and they were working on a model that could do that when the original series was cancelled.

But the saucer separation thing wasn't what I meant by it being "versatile". The original Constitution class ships were designed for a five year mission or exploration. They were powerful enough to defend themselves if necessary, but you got the impression that their Science departments were capable of a quick (if thorough) planetary survey, and then the ship had to move on to the next survey.
The Galaxy class ships were designed for a 20 year mission. They have a crew of over 800, including specialized Science departments. They can be used as front-line combat vessels, or provide in-depth exploration teams, or investigate a wide array of interstellar phenomena, and spend months at it if necessary. They are even large enough to relocate quite large colonies if they have to.

That's true. I didn't care for the shape of the Galaxy class ship at all. Someone once described it as looking like an unnatural cross between a humpbacked whale and frisbee!

There is definitely something hugely and appealingly iconic about the Kirk's Constitution-class Enterprise, but I voted for the Sovereign on pure coolness.

Loved Archer's Enterprise just loved the simplicity of the ship and their best attempt at making it seem primitive compared to Kirk's ship.

Enterprise in ST XI Abrams wanted to take the original TV series Enterprise and the movie franchise Enterprise and fuse them together into a new yet familiar Enterprise. His ambition was a ship that felt very realistic, that could “stand up” to today’s f/x standards—and beyond. “If you’re going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you’re going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?”
