The Constitution class was introduced around 2240. At that time the Constitution class was the fastest and most powerful ship type of the fleet and the only one officially designated as starship. 12 ships of this class were in service by the year 2267. Starting with the USS Enterprise in 2271, a number of Constitution-class ships have undergone a complete reconstruction that included new warp nacelles, modification of the engineering hull and "neck", enlargement of the saucer section and a new bridge module. The ships may have been decommissioned at the end of the 23rd century, one of them is displayed in the Starfleet museum.
Class specifications Heavy cruiser Length: 289m (original), 305m (refit) Deck count: 21 Max. speed: Warp 6 (cruise, old scale) Crew complement: 430 (around 2266)
USS Constitution NCC-1700 (refit) USS Constellation NCC-1017 USS Defiant NCC-1764 USS Eagle NCC-956 (refit) USS Endeavour NCC-1895 USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (refit 2271) USS Essex NCC-1697 USS Excalibur NCC-1664 USS Exeter NCC-1672 USS Farragut NCC-1647 USS Hood NCC-1703 USS Intrepid NCC-1831 USS Kongo NCC-1710 USS Lexington NCC-1709 USS Potemkin NCC-1657 USS Republic NCC-1371 USS Yorktown NCC-1717

The Miranda class is apparently a parallel development to the reconstructed Constitution class. The warp nacelles are attached to the saucer bottom, which is extended at the rear end to hold additional sensor arrays on the top and two shuttlebays. The original version has a photon torpedo tube mounted on a "rollbar", whereas the rollbar was removed from the Miranda II, a transport variant. The Miranda III has additional phaser cannons at the port and starboard sides of the saucer. Miranda-class starships are still in use during the Dominion War. Some older ships have been reassigned to act as transport vessels.
Class specifications Miranda II: Transport Length: 243m Crew complement: 200 (Reliant), 34 (Brattain)
USS Brattain NCC-21166 USS Lantree NCC-1837 (Miranda II) USS Majestic NCC-31060 USS Nautilus NCC-31910 USS Reliant NCC-1864 USS Saratoga NCC-1867 USS Saratoga NCC-31911 (Miranda III) USS ShirKahr NCC-31905 USS Sitak USS Tian An Men NCC-21382

The Excelsior NX-2000 was originally equipped with an experimental transwarp drive. A large number of Excelsior-class starships was built over a period of more than 60 years. Excelsior-class ships incorporate two shuttlebays in the engineering hull stern and keel. The Excelsior design is still in use by the year 2376.
Class specifications Heavy cruiser Length: 467m (original), 469m (refit) First commissioned in 2284
USS Al-Batani NCC-42995 USS Berlin NCC-14232 USS Cairo NCC-42136 USS Charleston NCC-42285 USS Crazy Horse NCC-50446 USS Crockett NCC-38955 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B (refit) USS Excelsior NX-2000/NCC-2000 USS Fearless NCC-14598 USS Frederickson NCC-42111 USS Gorkon NCC-40521 USS Grissom NCC-42857 USS Hood NCC-42296 USS Intrepid NCC-38907 USS Lakota NCC-42768 (refit) USS Lexington NCC-14427 USS Livingston NCC-34099 USS Malinche NCC-38997 USS Melbourne NCC-62043 USS Okinawa NCC-13958 USS Potemkin NCC-18253 USS Repulse NCC-2544 USS Roosevelt NCC-2573 USS Tecumseh NCC-14934 USS Valley Forge NCC-43305

The Oberth class is a very common science vessel design that is used by Starfleet as well as other Federation institutions. Although its first construction dates back at least as long as the Excelsior class, many ships of this class are still in service.
Class specifications Research vessel Length: approx. 150m Crew complement: 80
USS Biko NCC-50331 USS Bonestell NCC-31600 USS Cochrane NCC-59318 USS Copernicus NCC-623 USS Grissom NCC-638 USS Oberth NCC-602 USS Pegasus NCC-53847 USS Raman NCC-29487 USS Tsiolkovsky NCC-53911 USS Yosemite NCC-19002

The Constellation class is a starship type with four warp nacelles that was first commissioned around 2280. Warp nacelles and several components of the saucer section are essentially identical to the Constitution and Miranda classes. Constellation-class ships are outdated. Most of them seem to have been decommissioned prior to 2370
Class specifications Length: 310m Deck count: 15 Crew complement: 535 First commissioned in 2284
USS Constellation NCC-1974 USS Gettysburg NCC-3890 USS Hathaway NCC-2593 USS Magellan NCC-3069 USS Stargazer NCC-2893 USS Valkyrie NCC-2590 USS Victory NCC-9754 USS Gihlan NCC-9761 (Name unknown) NCC-7100

Enterprise is a prototype vessel of Earth Starfleet equipped with the first human-built propulsion system to achieve Warp 5. The starship was conceived by Henry Archer, with the support of Zefram Cochrane, and it took more than 30 years until it could finally be commissioned. Its hull is made of duranium. Enterprise sports phase cannons and torpedoes, protection is achieved through polarized hull plating. A transporting device is available, but transport of personnel is restricted to states of emergency. Enterprise has a shuttle drop bay and a grappler, a mechanical device to tow smaller vessels.
Class specifications Length: 225m Deck count: 7 Speed: Warp 4.5 (cruise), Warp 5.06 (max.) Crew complement: 82 First commissioned in 2151
Known ships Enterprise NX-01 Columbia NX-02

The Galaxy class is the result of an ambitious development program at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. It is the largest and most complex Starfleet starship built to date. The Galaxy class is primarily designed to replace the aged Ambassador and Oberth classes in research missions. Galaxy-class starships feature a detachable and independently operational saucer section, three shuttlebays and a captain's yacht at the bottom of the saucer.
Class specifications Explorer Length: 642m Deck count: 42 Max. speed: Warp 9.2 (cruise) Crew complement: 1014 First commissioned in 2357
USS Challenger NCC-71099 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D USS Galaxy NCC-70637 USS Magellan USS Odyssey NCC-71832 USS Venture NCC-71854 USS Trinculo NCC-71867 USS Yamato NCC-71807

Daedalus class
What little is known about this class is based on conjecture. No Daedalus class starships have ever been featured on screen; however, Commander Benjamin Sisko of Deep Space 9 had what is believed to be a model of a ship of this class in his office: it depicted a vessel with a spherical primary hull attached to a cylindrical engineering hull by a short, horizontal connection, with two warp nacelles supported by two uncurving pylons running upward and to the sides from the dorsal side of the secondary hull.
The finale episode of Star Trek: Enterprise ("These Are the Voyages...") which is set in the mid 22nd century, it was strongly implied that by 2161 the NX class of Warp 5 ships had become obsolete with the introduction of Warp 7-capable vessels. It is possible that the Warp 7 ship is the Daedalus Class starship, which would be coming into use around this time.
It is generally accepted that the USS Horizon and the USS Archon were both members of this class; a USS Daedalus could be supposed as well. In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Power Play," the USS Essex is identified as a Daedalus Class starship, which crashed into a moon orbiting planet Mab-Bu VI.
Episodes from the original series of Star Trek say that the USS Archon was pulled from orbit and was destroyed while orbiting planet Beta III, and the USS Horizon was destroyed sometime shortly after visiting planet Sigma Iotia II. Along with Essex, it seems many Daedalus Class starships met unfortunate ends in the latter half of the 22nd century.
In terms of the television show production, this is one of several proposed designs for the ship that later became the Starship Enterprise featured in the original show from the 1960s.
Mentioned, extrapolated, or accepted known starships:
* USS Daedalus (prototype) * USS Archon (NCC-189) * USS Essex (NCC-173) * USS Horizon (NCC-176)

Soyuz class
The Soyuz class of starship is similar to the Miranda class starship. Named for the Russian word for "union" the Soyuz-class vessels have a larger aft section to allow for greater cargo and shuttle space. This class also has four pods extending out from the middle of the main hull, these were never identified on screen. In 2288 the Soyuz class was retired from service, although one vessel of this type, the USS Bozeman, was encountered by the Enterprise-D in 2368 after being caught in a time loop for 90 years. Unlike the Miranda class the Soyuz class has been decommissioned at the end of the 23rd century.
Known Soyuz class starships:
* USS Bozeman. NCC-1941. o Commanded by Captain Morgan Bateson. In 2278, the Bozeman left its home starbase and headed out on patrol; it was subsequently caught in a time warp and thrown into the future, landing in 2368 (where it briefly became stuck in a time loop, repeatedly colliding with the Enterprise-D). The Bozeman remained in 2368 for the rest of its operational existence (converted to a standard Miranda configuration, it appeared in Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact). The Bozeman is still said to be in commission to this day, although its future in Starfleet for such an outdated ship seems bleak. However in the movie Star Trek Nemisis the scene where Data and Picard observe the fleet movements for the fleet battle against the romulan vessel the Bozeman is seen in manouvers with the rest of the fleet.

The Saladin class is a type of starship that originated in Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual. Diagrams from this Technical Manual were used in bridge displays in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Known Saladin class starships:
* USS Saladin o Pathfinder of the Saladin class. The ship was named for Saladin, the famous Kurdish general who drove the Crusaders from most of their territories, including Jerusalem, in the late 12th century.

The Ambassador class is a bulky starship type equipped for scientific missions as well as for combat. The class appears to be an intermediate design between the Excelsior and Galaxy classes. First launched in the early 24th century, the Ambassador is now among the aging ship designs.
Class specifications Heavy cruiser Length: 526m (Enterprise-C), approx. 526m (Yamaguchi)
Known ships USS Adelphi NCC-26849 USS Ambassador NCC-10521 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C USS Excalibur NCC-26517 USS Exeter NCC-26531 USS Gandhi NCC-26632 USS Horatio NCC-10532 USS Valdemar NCC-26198 USS Yamaguchi NCC-26510 USS Zhukov NCC-26136
