07.06.2007 Summer '07 Convention Preview
From Toronto to Columbus to Baltimore to San Diego to Las Vegas to Atlanta to London... It's summer — in case you didn't get the memo — and the Star Trek convention season is kicking into high gear all around the U.S. and beyond.
For starters, if you're anywhere near Toronto, Ontario, Canada this weekend, you should check out the Polaris 21 convention there, where Marina Sirtis is the special guest from Star Trek. That's going on today through Sunday, July 6-8.
Next weekend Vulkon Entertainment brings the future to Ohio with its Columbus Sci-Fi Expo, Friday through Sunday July 13-15. It will be headlined by Kate Mulgrew, Avery Brooks, Tim Russ, John Billingsley and Cirroc Lofton, and a few stars from Babylon 5 including Bill Mumy. Another special guest will be our own resident cartoonist David Redthingy, who will be talking about "The Trek Life" and hosting a panel on comics. He'll also have a table where he'll be signing the official show T-shirt which he designed, drawing sketches for the fans, and handing out a limited supply of free "Carl" mini-buttons. Get 'em while they're hot!
Over the same three-day weekend, the fan-run science fiction convention Shore Leave 19 takes place in Baltimore, Maryland, including special guests Nichelle Nichols, Casey Biggs ("Damar," etc.), William Campbell ("Koloth," "Trelane"), plus stars from Battlestar Galactica, Stargate and other shows. Also attending on the literary side will be several Star Trek authors such as Peter David, Keith DeCandido, Kevin Dilmore, Dayton Ward and others, along with Pocket Books editors Margaret Clark and Marco Palmieri.
The following weekend, July 20-22, in the Philadelphia area — more specifically Cherry Hill, New Jersey — Creation Entertainment brings its Official Star Trek Convention to the East Coast with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy heading the lineup. Other fan favorites appearing will be George Takei, Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, Robert Picardo, Marc Alaimo ("Dukat"), Suzie Plakson ("K'Ehleyr," etc.) and more.
And then on the West Coast, one of the most significant events in genre fandom will draw a ginormous crowd to the San Diego Convention Center. Comic-Con International takes place over four days, July 26-29, and some important Trek stuff will be happening. Namely, look for J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Pictures panel on Thursday, July 26, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. to talk about the upcoming "Star Trek" movie. Roberto Orci told us that he and writing partner Alex Kurtzman will also be at the panel, along with fellow "Trek XI" producers Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burke.
A "Sneak Peek" of the programming schedule has already been posted on the Comic-Con website, with the promise of a full schedule in a few days. We will provide a complete preview of Comic-Con — that is, anything with a Trek angle — when that info is available. In the meantime, though, we do know that George Takei will be there in the Exhibitors Room (related story), plus Eugene W. "Rod" Roddenberry will be on a panel regarding the DVD release of the Remastered Original Series. Former Trek producers Bryan Fuller will be there to talk about Pushing Daisies, Ronald D. Moore about Battlestar Galactica and Ira Steven Behr about The 4400, and as usual a number of Trek authors will be on various literary panels. The Comic-Con Film Festival will screen "Jerome Bixby's The Man from Earth" and Tim Russ' short "Eye of the Beholder" starring Chase Masterson.
Before you'll have a chance to fully recover from San Diego, it'll be time for Vegas! And this is where you'll see the most mind-blowing array of Star Trek stars ever at one event. Creation's next official Star Trek convention once again invades the Las Vegas Hilton for four days, August 9-12. Shatner, Nimoy, Brooks, Mulgrew, Trinneer, LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Terry Farrell, Nicole deBoer, Wallace Shawn ("Zek"), and... well, check out their site! This year there's a particular emphasis on creative personnel in attendance, including Nicholas Meyer, D.C. Fontana, Bob Justman, visual effects artist Ronald B. Moore, Michael & Denise Okuda ... plus David Redthingy and author Robert T. Jeschonek in return command appearances!
At the end of August through the Labor Day holiday, another huge convention takes place in the South. Dragon*Con in Atlanta, Georgia, claims the status as America's largest "popular arts" convention focusing mainly on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, etc. But there will also be a special emphasis this year on Star Trek, in particular the 20th Anniversary of The Next Generation with Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden and John de Lancie on hand to celebrate. Robert Picardo is another special guest, along with several guest actors and authors. One of the programming tracks at Dragon*Con is "TrekTrak," where a wide range of panels puts forth a variety of Trek-related topics for the actors, authors and other guests to discuss. Be sure to visit both the Dragon*Con website and the TrekTrak site to see just how much is going on. The days will be long but no doubt a great deal of fun!
Across the pond on Labor Day weekend, Patrick Stewart will grace the local London Film and Comic Con, taking place Saturday and Sunday, September 1-2. Other headliners at this U.K. event include Nana Visitor, Diana Muldaur and Louise Fletcher, along with several guests from the "Star Wars" franchise and many other shows.
Later in September Vulkon brings its Sci-Fi Expo to Houston, Texas, with LeVar Burton, Nana Visitor, Rene Auberjonois and Anthony Montgomery, September 21-23. And in November Vulkon goes to Orlando, Florida, with George Takei, Connor Trinneer, James Darren and Louise Fletcher on board.
And Creation holds its "Salute to Star Trek" in Sacramento, California, September 28-30, also celebrating TNG with Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis, along with George Takei and Robert Duncan McNeill. Creation then goes to Chicago in October to further mark the 20th anniversary with Frakes and Sirtis, and then to Secaucus, NJ, with Frakes currently scheduled.
Please note that all celebrity appearances at any convention are subject to cancellation or change!
