Thank you for that information. Was it a good novel?

Er, well, not really. A lot of those early novels were badly written.

I've read one or two myself, and I tend to agree. Have you read the relatively new series, following Riker on the Titan?

I only read one of them, "The Red King" I think it was called. Not too bad, but the authors tried to introduce way, way too many characters, and it was hard to keep them apart. One cute thing is that the Titan's shuttlecraft are all named after famous jazz musicians.

Thinking of things I liked about this movie, the fleeting image of Picard as the kind of man he would have been if he hadn't joined Starfleet, if he had stayed on Earth with his father's vineyard was kind of nice. But at the same time... it rings a little hollow, doesn't it? That Picard would not have been the same Picard we know. He might as well imagine what kind of life he had had if he had been born blind, like Geordi.

Yes, that's a good point. In order to have that kind of family, he would've not gone to the Academy, not joined Starfleet, not been the Captain Picard that we know. You can sort of picture Picard thinking wistully about that kind of life from time to time, sort of a "it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there" kind of thing. Come to think of it, maybe that's why he was able to shake off the effect of the vortex so easily.
