I liked Bev better than Kath. Although there were some funny moments with Picard and Pulaski...like them always ending up quoting the rule book at each other. I always thought that was funny cuz with Picard and Crusher they always seemed to go the romantic route or do this like on again off again type thing like couples sometimes do even though they were not a couple, well except maybe in that one episode with Q. Too tired to remember the name.
Pulaski was also made to be a female version of Doctor McCoy. I liked McCoy a lot, and it's always bad to tinker with an already successful character. I also was not too keen on how she treated Data, or that line when Deanna Troi was giving birth. But I think Pulaski and Data were supposed to be TNGs Spock & McCoy.
Beverly Crusher on the other hand was quite accepting, compassionate, and a mother, which in my opinion gave her a little more personalitly and aloud her to see certain things from other peoples point of view instead of just her own. Made her do her job a bit better and also allowed her to relate to people she treated.

I don't see how you can claim that Pulaski didn't have a personality, or that she was some kind of clone of McCoy. Her reaction to Data was exactly what one might expect of a biologist. She actually did warm to him later on.
Pulaski was also "accepting and compassionate". Maybe you forgot in "The Icarus Factor" how she said of her patients, "When they hurt, I hurt."

Was Dr Pulaski the doc who replaced Picard's artifiaial heart after he had been shot in an away mission that turned bad?

You're thinking of "Tapestries", a much later episode I think. But there was a season two episode where he had to go in to the Starbase for a replacement. He didn't want anyone on the ship to know about it, but there was a complication and Pulaski had to be called in. I wish I could remember the name of the episode. I think it was the same one Wesley had to take an Academy entrance exam.

It may have been the one with Q taking Picard back in time 30 years to avoid the fight with the Naussicans that stabbed him through the heart so he would have had a real one and not have been killed by the alien's weapon.

That's the one I mean -- "Tapestry". Isn't it?
The season two episode I was talking about is called "The Samaritan Snare".

I have to say that I was fond of Pulaski as well. Possibly because I only have the first two seasons on DVD.

I would have to say Pulaski. I never liked Crusher. Just something about her. I don't know maybe it's because she's a bit soft. Or maybe it's just my pure HATRED for her son rubbing off on her but I always thought Pulaski was much more interesting. Yes, even though she was a bit blunt about what she thought about Data at first but she did begin to understand him and respect him for the genius that is Data. I also hated how Crusher acted around the captain.... I have NO idea what Picard saw in her. I was going to Northampton to a star trek convention in November with my mum and the actor who plays Kes and Diana Muldair were going to be the special guests and I was sooooo excited(being the 13 year old girl I am) to see them!! But it was cancelled which was a major bummer. I love Diana Muldair as an actor though.
