Well, they do have a Briefing Room, which is the conference room for senior officers and those involved in important away missions. The room that we hear called the "ready room" is, apparently, formally the captain's ready room, which suggests that it is a room in which the captain himself can prepare for whatever. That would make more sense.
Moreover, apparently the ready room on British naval ships was a small room adjacent to the bridge where the captain had to be in times of war, in order to be on the bridge whenever he was needed. Hence, I suggest that that would be the inspiration for the captain's ready room, seeing as Starfleet's military aspects parallel naval organisations rather than air forces or armies.

True. And I suppose, considering Picard's gravity of manner, hearing him say, "I'll be in my office" doesn't have the same stately ring to it.
