Everyone knows the crew lounge in the bow of the Enterprise is called Ten Forward, a droll if not terribly imaginative play on words. Recently I was writing a new story which takes place on board my ship (the Odysseus) and I thought to myself that surely we can do better than that.
So I'm throwing it open to the forum -- what would you name the crew lounge in the bow of your ship?

It's a play on words of the CB radio code "10-4", isn't it?

242 is a D&D reference? In what way?

In my Homebrew Realm, it stands for the 242nd layer of the Abyss, and the malevolent entity that torments the PC's from time to time...

I'm under the impression that Ten Forward is so called because of its location - Deck Ten, Forward Section One. (TNG: The Child)

That sounds the most plausible

I'm under the impression that Ten Forward is so called because of its location - Deck Ten, Forward Section One. (TNG: The Child) That sounds a bit like "folk etymology" -- that is, coming up with a plausible explanation after the fact. I'm not disputing what you say. But I would expect a popular meeting place to have its own name, not just a numerical designation. If that were the case, they could just as easily have called it "One F Ten" or something.

If you mean that the writers came up with the reason after having previously referred to it as "Ten Forward", then that's quite possible, I'd imagine. However, I believe that it is in the episode "The Child" that the place is explicitly explained to be on Deck Ten, Forward Section One.

Being in the military myself, "Deck Ten, Forward Section One", certainly sounds like something they would do.

And popular usage would then shorten it to something that falls easily off the tongue. Okay, that sounds reasonable.

And how about the Ready Room? According to a glossary of military terms I came across, a ready room is a sort of conference room on board an aircraft carrier, where the pilots are briefed for missions and stand by as they await their orders to sortie. How did that name get applied to Picard's office?
