It's simple things that make it more realistic, y'know? For example in one episode Scotty remarks that the design of a certain ship let him know that it was a rare ion drive ship, but at the time the ship just looked like a rocket; remastered, it's much more in line with what we know know ion drive-powered vessels to hypothetically look like.

Yes, and in "The Deadly Years" when they have to cross the Neutral Zone, in the Original, the Romulans were using Klingon type ships for some reason. In the remastered version, they have their classic Warbirds (like the one in "Balance of Terror").

But the Romulans were given a bunch of D-7's in a trade agreement with the Klingons, so they should have left them in!

Remastered/reworked editions can sometimes be a great blessing; apparently the revised version (i.e. with extra scenes and stuff) of The Motion Picture was great, whereas the original version shown in cinemas was terrible.

I didn't even know there was a revised edition of The Motion Picture!

Yes the special effects are cheesy and the acting sometimes over the top but it is my fav. For the time the aliens, ships and other special effects were the tops.

They did the best with what they had, and it's amazing how well the stories themselves still hold up. Have you seen the new remastered DVDs?

One thing I noticed while watching the DVDs is that the Kirk always orbits so high, you can see the entire planet. As opposed to Picard, who seems to favor lower orbits. I wonder if that means the definition of "standard orbit" changed in the interim, or if it's up to the captain's descretion, and some captains just like higher orbits than others.

I would be inclined to guess it was captain's discretion. Just like in the Original, Kirk nearly always took along a doctor and yeoman, which Riker rarely seems to bother with.

Another thing I'm noticing, watching the new DVDs, is enlisted people every now and then. In "Charlie X", for instance, Janice tries to push Charlie off on Yeoman Third Class Lawton, who she says is the same age (17).

ToS does more so than TNG.

Quite true. In the TNG episode "Drumhead", there was a medical technician who was an enlisted man. But I can't think of any others off hand.
