We don't know why Ferengi are categorized so early in Borg history. Maybe some of them ended up in a wormhole long ago, or Seven was simply confused and meant to say "Species 5180".

VOY: "Mortal Coil"
Seven: "A small freighter, containing a crew of 39 taken in the Dalmine sector. They were easily assimilated. Their dense musculature made them excellent drones."

Both the Borg and the Federation believed that the species was extinct. Note that these obviously can't be the familiar Yridians from TNG. The ultimate proof can be found in ENT: "Twilight".

Seven: "Species 6339, Humanoid. Warp-capable. Origin: Grid 124, Octant 22 Theta. They first encountered the Borg approximately four years ago. Since that time, 11 billion individuals have been assimilated. Three days ago, the Collective detected one of their last surviving shuttlecraft. A cube was sent to intercept it." The shuttle was purposely infected with a virus that would spread through the Borg vinculum.

Species 6961 "Ktarians"

Erin and Magnus Hansen examine a drone on the Raven. "Species 6961...Ktarian...Tritanium infrastructure. He's a tactical drone." Note that this alleged Ktarian looks neither like the TNG nor like the VOY Ktarians.

Species 8472 is a non-humanoid species from a realm called "Fluidic Space", impervious to assimilation and to Borg weapons.

What does everyone think on the Borg origin theories, then? 'Cause I'm under the impression that the one that Star Trek: Legacy retroactively continues from The Motion Picture is that the V'Ger probe was found by a cybernetic race (the Borg) who fixed it and sent it on its way, but this caused a schism in their society and two/three hundred years later they've expanded and have started conquering other species.

Sounds like a reasonable theory to me.

That sounds pretty good to me. But, I find one flaw, well, two. I think that the
v'ger probe was sent to asimilate earth and that THAT was the reason the borg sent it back.

One -- From what I see of the Borg, they would just have assimiliated the Voyager six probe's technology or ignored it. Voyager had very primitive technology, so I don't see what reason the Borg would have had to repair it (unless as Lexi suggests, their culture was different in those days).

Two -- Even if that had happened, V'ger didn't behave as if it was trying to assimilate anything. It was just returning to its "launch point".

Three -- Remember the symbiotic creatures which nearly took over the Federation in "Conspiracy"? What if they were sent to ease the way for the Borg?

I certainly think that, from an audience's point of view, it's a bit lame that Janeway brought back all that anti-Borg technology from 2404, or whenever it was. I mean, it'll keep the Federation safe for twenty or thirty years from them, but as far as a good story goes...xD
