I have a problem that could be right up you guys' alley. I'm writing another fan fiction story, and I've hit a snag. The situation is this -- five people are at a small oasis in the middle of a desert, near the ruins of an ancient city. They are camped inside a decrepit one room stone house, the only part of the ruin they could find with four walls and a partial roof. Two men, two women and a fifteen year old boy. One couple is from my starship, but (for reasons it would be too complicated to go into) they are stranded here with nothing but their comm badges and a tricorder, which they are trying not to use in front of the natives. The native culture is in the Dark Ages, which means they have spears, swords, maces etc. One of the party has already been killed by something the legends describe like a vampire. The group didn't literally see it happen, they just found the body drained of life with no wounds but ring-shaped bruises on the face. In the circumstances, the only thing the natives can think to do is drive a stake through the guy's heart, bundle him up securely in a blanket, and put him on the roof where the scavengers can't get to him. Now they're just trying to make it through the night, the men taking turns on guard. The Starfleet people are waiting until they have the opportunity alone so they can use their tricorder to study the corpse in a little more detail.
But that's where I'm stuck. I know what they learn when they get a chance to scan the body, but I can't think of a dramatic way to get them out of this situtation. The modus operandi of the vampire would be to lure them away one by one, starting with whoever is on watch. But that seems too obvious, not to mention dull. Plus, I haven't played AD&D in so long, I can't think of any of the standard precautions the party would take against this. Any ideas?
