Shatner to Host Game Show
Since you can't possibly have enough Shatner in your life already, there is yet another opportunity to invite him into your living room. Very soon the Captain will be the host of a new game show on ABC called Show Me the Money (apparently, Cuba Gooding Jr. wasn't available!).
Show Me is a trivia game where players answer questions to win prize money. "They also must contend with a never-before-seen mechanism that can cut contestants' winnings to nothing or instantly catapult them into the millions," said a press release.
ABC has ordered seven episodes of the one-hour game show, and could premiere it as early as next month, according to Daily Variety. Press reports are not clear if this will be in a primetime or daytime slot.
"Bill was the guy we wanted from day one to host Show Me the Money," said David Goldberg, president of Endemol USA, the producing company (which is also behind Deal or No Deal). "More than anything, we were looking for a great showman, and in addition to being an instantly recognizable entertainer to audiences of all ages, Bill's got a naturally warm and witty presence that is simply perfect for the material."
Shatner will continue to maintain his schedule with Boston Legal, also on ABC, and the plethora of other activities he's been scheduled for, including a convention appearance next month in Secaucus, New Jersey, at a New York-area 40th anniversary celebration by Creation Entertainment, November 10-12.
And have you seen his latest commercial for DirecTV? Keep an eye out for it (we saw it here in L.A. during the syndicated airing of the remastered Star Trek): It uses footage from "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" intercut with newly shot footage of present-day Shatner in the movie-style uniform.
The ad starts on a shot of the Enterprise-A and Gorkon's Klingon battlecruiser, then cuts to Kirk entering the bridge, with Chekov asking, very seriously, "Shall we raise our shields, Keptin?" The "remastered" Kirk answers, "At ease, Mr. Chekov," and turns to camera: "Again with the shields! I wish he'd just relax and enjoy the amazing picture clarity of the DirecTV HD we just hooked up! With what Starfleet just ponied up for this big-screen TV" — he gestures to the viewscreen, then turns to walk out again — "settling for cable would be ... illogical." He says that while passing by Spock, who clears his throat. As Shatner steps into a mocked-up turbolift, he smirks and says, "What? I can't use that line?"
