I just noticed we didn't have a topic on LOTR! I'll kick it off with a question. I was reading Fellowship of the Ring the other day and I started to wonder. What do you think Tolkein would think if you could show him the movie? Would he love it? Hate it? What do you think?

He would love it I think. After the cartoons, he vowed that another film would not be done until the technology was advanced enough to do it right. He died keeping that vow.

This is a good question. I don't know much about him except what he wrote in the book. Obviously the movie changed a lot of things but still captured the essence of his story. As much as I liked the trilogy, the movie improved on it a lot. Many chapters of the book were just tedious. It would depend on how important he thought those changes were. I think he would be disappointed at some of the changes but overall he would approve.

In the introduction he says that the Scouring of the Shire was one of the most important parts. And yet it was droped from the movie entirely. I imagine that would have disappointed him. Whether he would have thought it ruined the whole movie would be a different question.
What about the effects? The technology of the movie itself?:

I liked the Scouring, but I can see why they didn't include it in the movie version. It wouldn't have felt right.
I recall Tolkien wasn't a big fan of technology. I don't think he'd have liked the CGI stuff. But the acting, yeah!

I didn't like all the computer generated armies. But the effects that allowed them to strink actors down to hobbit size! And the models of Minas Tirith and Rivendell! Wow!

I agree with you there. The best special effects are the ones you don't even notice at the time. Only afterward you think, Hey wait a minute! How did they do that? I heard it took Tolkein something like fifteen years to write the book, longhand. He would have loved the word processor!

It took him like thirteen years! Then he had to type it himself!

Me, I can't imagine writing a long story by hand anymore, let alone a massive trilogy. Even with my little stories I have go back and forth editting and re-editting.

With a Star Trek story, spell check can be a nuissance. Would you believe that it doesn't recognize common everyday words like "tritanium" and "shuttlecraft"?
