The new movie takes place in a new continuity, but it is definitely meant to be canon. It is intended to form an integral part of the Star Trek Universe, although it effectively erases TOS from history. The redefinition of events and characters and the redesign of all sets, props and ships disconnect the movie from the existing Star Trek continuity in a similar fashion as the Mirror Universe.

How can it be meant to be canon if it effectively erased the Original Series from existence? I don't want to knock the movie, because I haven't seen it, but from everything I've seen, it doesn't look as if it adds anything at all the to the Star Trek mythos. It just sounds like a typical summer blowout movie that everyone will forget next week when the Terminator movie comes out.

Even though XI is an alternate timeline, the original timeline is intact because 'old' Spock is still alive. So it has that going for it...

I've been seeing suggestions that the new movie is nominated for an Academy award! What would you do if it won?
Personally, I would decide right then and there that the Academy Awards were no longer valid (it was bad enough a few years back when Gladiator won).
