To answer your question, Admiral, in the sense that Thallassa is talking about, yes it's obviously a hoax. The question is whether someone could invent a completely alien language and do it well enough to fool generations of linguists. I'm not saying it's impossible, but if he didn't write a second book, or leave some kind of key so that his writing could be deciphered, the whole project was just a waste of time, wasn't it?

It is probably not a waste of time since people still talk about it.

It's like a woman I once read about who went into a trance and wrote in Martian! She drew pictures, wrote whole books in this strange alien script. Only in turned out she was just using a code. The so-called Martian language was just French written in the strange script she invented.

Yes, and it's kind of interesting that her Martian bears a striking resemblance to the Voynich Manuscript. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A9l%C3%A8ne_SmithAnd to clarify what I meant earlier, we have to ask WHY we bother to write books, write anything really. The reason we write is to communicate information or ideas to people separated from us by distance or time. If nobody can read the book, communication has failed. True, that doesn't mean it was a complete waste of time, but the main reason for writing in the first place has failed.

True, that doesn't mean it was a complete waste of time, but the main reason for writing in the first place has failed. That only means that communication wasn't his main reason for writing the book. Maybe he was trying to show off. Or maybe he meant it more as a work of art than as a book.
